Alien Egg

Hi!

I did this alien egg from the Alien films not long ago, I had some restrictions which was to keep the model under 1000 triangles and with a texture of 256x256.  Due to lack of time I decided to do only the egg as good as possible and not model a face hugger.
I modeled one half of the egg and then mirrored a copy to make a whole egg, using ZBrush it was easy to make it seamless.
The base of the egg is unique without any copy and mirroring. Together, the egg and the base gives a model with variety as seen in the picture below where every copy of the egg is rotated 90 degrees and looks different from each angle.

And here's the result, lit and rendered in Bitsquid.

C&C are very welcome.

Cheers.

Continuing the orc

I've done a couple of changes to the model, mostly to the proportions of the body to get him look even more mean and dangerous. But also to his armor, to give it a low-tech look. I've refined a couple of things and have used Dynamesh in Zbrush to accomplish otherwise cumbersome modeling, man I love that feature!

Thanks to my friend Jakob Pålinger who helped me find the matcap I use for this model at Zbrush central, check it out!

Cheers.

Orc..ish

Hello!

Today I had the time to continue to work on my latest character.
I intend to do a character that would fit in in the latest games out there, to see if I can do it :).

So far I've done a concept, and I've blocked up the model with all its various parts.

I also went ahead and started to model the body to get the anatomy working and in place.

I painted on the model to get a feel for what I want, so that I can nail down the colors now and save my self some work in the future.
Not sure about all the colors yet though, need some more painting around.

Great news and sketches!

So, this Tuesday we released our game "Krater", in which I've been doing some character modeling and texturing. The game is awesome and it feels real great to be part of it!
Check it out!

I realized I don't have to scan my sketchbook to show what I've done, like back in the days.
Now I just use my smart phone and take some pics, sure it's not the same quality, but it's enough and it's faster. Haleluja technology!
This are a couple of months old.

More to come soon!

Cheers!

Metal!

I couldn't help my self from beginning a new piece out of the experience of previous metal surface studies.

So this is  what I came up with.

And then I carried on with the studies...

Study study!

Been doing some studies of value, and also training painting metal surfaces.
It's pretty funny and much easier then I first thought actually.

Bump!

Wow, long time since I updated the blogg now.
Been really busy doing my work placement at Fatshark, working as a texture artist, since the beginning of this year.
I'm doing textures (and some zbrush modeling too) for their game called Krater, it's a going to be awesome ;).

In lunch times I've been working on some personal pieces, here's a character from a book I'm reading (Nick Perumovs "Keeper of the swords" series) named Sidri, a gnome.

More to come, some day.. :).

Krater, Fan Art.

Hello.

The Swedish game compay Fatshark is making a cool game due to 2012.
It's called "Krater" and is taking place in a post apocalyptic Sweden, can't get cooler then this!

I got very inspired by the lore I read over at their forum, so I did these two concepts/fan art.

Back to basics!

I felt the urge to do some more observation paintings rather then elaborated paintings that takes a lot of time.
Kind of going back to the basics and study stuff, there's still a lot to learn.
So here I did a value study from a pic shot by my dearest, taken this summer.

I had to squeeze my eyes a lot while looking at the reference, this helped me see the values big shapes and biggest contrast, even though in this picture the contrast is very obvious. But it also helped me block out the color a bit so I could translate the color into a value.

I think and hope this approach will help me in my plain air painting, where values are very important to nail down.

More to come soon!

New website/portfolio!

I've collected my best stuff and made a portfolio out of it, check it out at www.carloslundhall.com!

Also I'm searching for a work placement as a 3D-Character artist at game studios all over Sweden!
So if you know somebody who's looking for, or if YOU are looking for a talented 3D-artist to work for you, for free (!), for six months, contact me! ----> carlos.lundhall@futuregames.se

Doodles

Some recent doodles, done while taking a pause from all the 3D work.
Also testing out some new photoshop tools, like the lasso tool technique.

And here's some concepts for the Brawl contest over at gameartisans.org, I never got further than a simple 3dmesh based on the third concept. It's some different takes on Necro from the Street Fighter games.

Small update, blocking the model up

Most of the model is now blocked out, so now I will tweak the proportions to get it all right.
After that it's time to start the high res cloth modeling, funny stuff!

Fan Art, Dust Tactics

Zup!

The ogre is now almost finished, I put it the hands of a good friend and classmate so he can rig it, he will then animate it and I will just pose the ogre and do a final render.

So until that is done I'm starting out a new project, that follows the curriculum of my school.
Right now we have ten weeks to specialize on one subject, and mine will of course be modeling, more exact character modeling.

Once again I don't want to waste time doing concepts first, so I choose one of my favorite games Dust Tactics as my inspiration.
The plan is to do one model, and then turn that model into different characters just tweaking the textures and some minor remodeling.
For that purpose Dust Tactics with its squad of soldiers suits me very well.
The soldiers in the squads wear almost the same armor, cloth and gear, only thing different is the face and some equipment and weapons.

The whole thing will take about five weeks, I hope ;).

Texturing!

Doing some texturing, mainly to the face and torso so far.
Have to get rid of all the seams and do some color correction to get the texture to feel natural.
